Heather Kelday
  Biography

"After a ten-plus-year successful run on the music scene, mostly fronting the bands Barefoot and A Band of Owls, singer/songwriter Heather Kelday is making a bold move and flying solo. Blessed with a dreamy voice, the gifted songwriter describes the world as she sees it in self-penned pearls that can be found on her much-anticipated debut solo album The Hitchin' Post. A versatile multi-instrumentalist, Kelday plays her own blend of folk-which makes definite forays into blues, soul, bluegrass, and jazz-on banjo, mandolin, guitar and piano and is often accompanied by well-known artists from the East Coast music community. One of our most promising musicians Heather Kelday is not to be missed."
-Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, 2009

Considered a blend of folk, jazz, blues and bluegrass, Heather Kelday writes in the creative spirit of indie-pop music, while rooting her songs in folk melodies. Heather’s strong voice, multi-instrumental talents (including banjo, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin and piano), and lyrical passion for the natural world carve a unique place for her in Canada’s music scene. Her latest release ‘The Hitchin’ Post’ opened to a sold out crowd at the Al Whittle Theatre in April, 2009 and has been receiving attention throughout Canada and beyond.

In the past year Heather has played shows in Thunder Bay, Toronto, Wolfville, Halifax, Lunenburg and many other places throughout Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia. She has shared the stage with such artists as: Tanglefoot, Annabelle Chvostek, Craig Cardiff, Kim Barlow, Old Man Leudecke, David Myles, Mark Reeves, Suzie Vinnick, Jim Byrnes, Steve Dawson and Stephen Fearing, Joel Plasket and Mary Gauthier.

In 2009, Heather has played 9 major solo shows in the Maritimes and 18 shows in Ontario and Quebec (with two tours in March and October). She was a featured performer at the Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival, the Deep Roots Festival, and the Dead of Winter Music Festival as well as the opening act for the Folk Fiesta in Lunenburg.

In 2009 Heather has helped produce and play on two albums of new and upcoming singer/songwriters – Bonnie Couchie and Megan Lickley, as well as playing on Mike Aube’s latest release – ClusterFolk. In 2009 she received two grants from NS Department of Tourism, Culture and Heritage for her new album The Hitchin Post, for writing and touring.
