Heather Kelday Releases - The Hitchin’ Post

April 7, 2009

Wolfville, Nova Scotia: Indie, folk and blues inspired singer/songwriter Heather Kelday will be releasing her debut solo record – The Hitchin’ Post, accompanied by the Mud Creek Valley String Symphonic on Friday April 17, 2009, The Al Whittle Theater, Wolfville, 8:00 – 10:30 PM - guest opener Acres and Acres.

A dash of jazz, a dose of soul, a heartbeat of local culture, and a chorus of folk strings is the premise for “The Hitchin’ Post”. Celebrating the artistic fervor of Nova Scotia’s grassroots music scene, singer/songwriter Heather Kelday has created a work that invites a dynamic group of musicians to complete her vision of an album seeded in local culture.

Coursing the veins of Canada’s landscape, Heather Kelday depicts tales of human nature and our connection to the past through her latest work – The Hitchin’ Post. There is a strong tie to Canadian history in the song “Carmacks” which journeys deep into the Alaskan gold rush to interpret the harsh living of First Nation’s women. “Open the Night” takes listeners on the road with four young aspiring musicians and a country full of nurturing folks. In “Tide” we see Heather’s vulnerability to the tides of her home on the Bay of Fundy as she explores her own understanding of growth and loss. Songs such as “Film’s View”, “Hitchin’ Post”, and “Yellow Lady Slipper”, draw metaphors to love’s fruition, growth and a final balance. Heather’s songs are identified as “a soundscape of human connection”.

“I feel so lucky to be surrounded by amazing and talented musicians in Nova Scotia. The Annapolis valley is really growing into a hub for live music. Under the alias of the Mud Creek Valley String Symphonic, the release shows will feature 7 local independent musicians from the Wolfville area including Ariana Nasr –Violin, Saxophone, Andy Flinn – Upright Bass, Jon Bailey – Drum Kit, Megan Lickley – Vocals, Piano, Accordian, John Kavanagh – Gamba, Andi Kavanagh – Tabla, Mridangium, and Steve Ambra – Cello. This will be a unique treat for our audience and for me!” says Heather Kelday.

Considered a blend of folk, jazz, blues and bluegrass, Heather Kelday writes in the creative spirit of indie-pop music, while rooting her songs in folk melodies. Heather’s strong voice, multi-instrumental talents (including banjo, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin, bass and piano), and lyrical passion for the natural world carve a unique place for her in Canada’s music scene. In September 2007, after 6 years of touring and performing with bands "Barefoot' and 'A Band of Owls' she hit the road solo with a 2008 East Coast Music Association Showcase as a CBC Galaxie Rising Star, a featured artist in the Lunenburg Harbour Folk Festival in Lunenburg for August 2009, live performances on CBC’s Canada Live, Atlantic Canada’s All the Best and Atlantic Airwaves.
